Ms. Latonia Best
Hello, my name is Latonia Best. I am a middle school Exceptional Children's Teacher here at Edgewood Community Developmental School. I am in my fourth year of teaching students with Special Needs. Prior to working at Edgewood, I was a mentor for three boys (two of which had a hearing and speech impairment and one who has a hydrocephalus head along with ADD) from 1990 until their graduation in 2004. Subsequently, I continue to mentor one of the young men, who is now a Manager. I worked at Caswell Developmental Center for 19 years in several different capacities (Meal Program Coordinator, Health Care Supervisor I, Health Care Technician II, Health Care Technician I, and an Environmental Technician I) with Special Need Adults prior to accepting this position as an EC teacher. I currently hold a BA in Psychology, a BA in Justice Studies and a BA in Religion. I am working on a Masters in Educational Administration. I truly enjoy working with Students with special needs. Teaching someone a skill and watching them master that skill is what I call a successful moment. I have three children a sophomore in college, a senior in college and a seventh grader. Therefore, I am no stranger to differentiation due to having to differentiate how to teach my own children. As we all know who know children, there are not any two children who are alike and there are not any two children who learn in the same like manner. Striving for Academic Excellence, building upon a student's foundation, using 21st Century skills and promoting safety first, are my goals to helping students reach their maximum potential.
